What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy) is a type of therapy that helps you heal from traumatic or upsetting life events. Trauma is specific to your experience and can include anything that is difficult for you to move past. EMDR can help you process single incidents of trauma or repeated trauma exposures.
The EMDR model theorizes that traumatic memories are stored incorrectly in the brain, which causes an emotional reaction to anything that triggers the memory. The purpose of EMDR is to reprocess and correctly store memories so that you can access them in a healthier and less triggering way.
How EMDR Differs from Talk Therapy
EMDR therapy requires the use of bilateral stimulation (BLS) while simultaneously recalling a traumatic memory. BLS refers to any alternating movements or sensations that facilitate communication between the right and left sides of the brain. This communication ultimately speeds up and enhances the processing of traumatic memories. Examples of online BLS include guided eye movements or self tapping on shoulders/legs.
