What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy) is a type of therapy that helps you heal from traumatic or upsetting life events. Trauma is specific to your experience and can include anything that is difficult for you to move past. EMDR can help you process single incidents of trauma or repeated trauma exposures.
The EMDR model theorizes that traumatic memories are not properly stored in the brain, creating an emotionally reactive response to anything that triggers the trauma. The purpose of EMDR is to reprocess and effectively store memories so that you can access them in a healthier and less triggering way.
How EMDR Differs from Talk Therapy
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (BLS) which are alternating left and right movements to facilitate communication between the right and left sides of the brain. This communication ultimately speeds up and enhances the processing of traumatic memories.
With online EMDR therapy, I will have you recall a disturbing memory while simultaneously guiding you to move your eyes from left to right or to self tap on shoulders/legs.
