How Does Online EMDR Therapy Work?
What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing therapy. EMDR therapy is a treatment modality that uses bilateral stimulation (alternating left and right movements) to help the brain process and heal from traumatic experiences. Traditionally, EMDR therapists have engaged patients in bilateral stimulation through guided eye movements, tapping, or tactile pulses. Since the pandemic, many therapists have had success treating patients online using virtual EMDR therapy. Read below to understand how EMDR therapy can be conducted through a virtual platform.
How Does Online EMDR Therapy Work?
EMDR therapy is different from traditional therapy due to its use of bilateral stimulation. Bilateral stimulation (BLS) activates both sides of the brain to facilitate the processing of upsetting memories. Many people ask how BLS can be done virtually since it requires the patient to experience alternating left and right movements. Below are some examples of how my practice facilitates EMDR through a telehealth platform.
My practice utilizes a software specifically designed to conduct EMDR therapy online. This software provides options for visual and auditory BLS. For example, the software places two dots on the patient’s screen to help guide their eye movements from left to right.
Some patients do not prefer eye movements and find they process better through tapping. In this case, virtual patients can opt to self-tap on their shoulders or legs as the therapist guides them through the processing of disturbing memories.
Some patients prefer to use their own equipment to help them reprocess memories. In these circumstances, the patient can purchase a device that creates buzzing and pulsing sensations. Neurotek sells BLS devices that can be used from the comfort of your own home during EMDR sessions.
