The Unexpected Other Woman. How to Deal with a Narcissistic Mother-In-Law.

Narcissistic Mother-In-LawThe Narcissistic Mother and Son Dynamic

The dynamic between a narcissistic mother and her son is often enmeshed and codependent. Narcissistic mothers tend to rely on their sons to meet their needs for attention, validation, and companionship. This enmeshment confuses the son’s priorities and places a significant strain on his marriage and other interpersonal relationships. Sons of narcissistic mothers are prone to anxiety and depression and at a higher risk for developing Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Signs of a Narcissistic Mother-In-Law

Below are indicators that your mother-in-law may have narcissistic traits and/or an enmeshed relationship with her son.

Your Mother-In-Law:

  • Is envious of you and your relationship with her son
  • Has poor to no boundaries
  • Triangulates (involves others in conflict to influence or gain control)
  • Makes you feel excluded, ganged up on, or like an outsider
  • Expects your husband to prioritize her feelings and needs over yours
  • Does not accept accountability
  • Excessively seek attention
  • Frequently guilt trips
  • Has no genuine interest in others’ feelings
  • Makes passive aggressive comments
  • Is overly critical

How to Deal with a Narcissistic Mother-In-Law

Communicate with your spouse: Communicate your concerns with your spouse and try to form a united front. This helps eliminate your mother-in-law’s attempts at triangulation. Avoid name calling or insults as this could make your partner feel defensive.

Set boundaries: Set and enforce boundaries with your mother-in-law by being firm, polite, and consistent.

Stay calm: Narcissists tend to enjoy drama and conflict. By remaining neutral and calm, you can eliminate engagement and conflict with your mother-in-law.

See a therapist: Reach out to a mental health professional who specializes in narcissistic abuse and/or family therapy for additional support.
